Steelcase Pyramid

If you’re in the West Michigan area and want to do some (sub)urban exploring check out the abandoned Steelcase Pyramid over by the airport.

It was built in 1989 and housed the corporate development department until consolidated with another building in 2009. It was also know for integrating “green” elements when built – the heat generated from lower floors used internally during the cold Michigan winters.

Some suggested in 2009 it would be a suitable building for another West Michigan corporation: Amway. Pyramid and all…

I like this related editorial cartoon by John Auchter. Less than stellar photo taken by my non 4G iPhone.

  1. Ooooo, that is a cool building. Definitely a great candidate for urbex. Of course, I’d have to go to Michigan to see it!

    • There’s one week in May when the weather is quite nice and the mosquitoes are dormant.

You have a very nice site by the way. I’m on the hunt for good Costa Rica info so I’ll check it out more!

      • Hey, thanks! I definitely see some common themes between our sites … the whole “hometown stuff mixed with travel” concept.

And a big haw-haw on the Michigan comment. I love ripping on Michigan, especially Detroit (mostly because of the transplanted Red Wings fans here in Phoenix. Annoying!).

  2. The pyramid isn’t abandoned, still houses Steelcase employees and will until 2012 if not longer.
