So you’re jammin’ to Pink, yakking on your cell phone while applying your makeup when this monster tumbles off a semi trailer and rolls right at you. Yikes. Straight out of Terminator 2.
This giant piece of mining equipment fell off a truck this morning on busy interstate 70. Someone explain to me why we still have mines?
The disproportionate size of this spindle almost appears photoshopped. Perhaps it will wind up on Snopes?

having just moved from my hometown of denver to a large city and opting out of being a car owner, this is total soapbox fodder. highways, particularly I-70, scare the bejeezus out of me.
and as the daughter of a mineral process engineer and contractor, i can tell you that every time you use your cell phone, computer, microwave, car, air conditioning, prescription drugs, anything made of plastic, any dyed fabric, halogen lamps, or iPod, you should thank a miner.

Hi Gijyun - where did you move to? I’ve mentioned on my blog that I share a car with my partner and I bike to work. I fully support communities large or small, (for example Chicago, Portland, or Fort Collins,) that promote and encourage car free/car light living.
Just curious if you’ve found your new home condusive to that lifestyle?
Thanks for the info on mining. The only time we ever hear about mining is when something horrific happens. Like most things you purchase and consume it benefits the end user to educate themselves on how those products are made and where they come from, even if for the appreciation aspect alone.
Thanks for the note - james…

you probably never hear much about mining (save tragedies) because miners are engineers, and engineers are crazy, and crazy people don’t have public relations departments (save courtney love and george w.).
i moved to philadelphia. i grew up in southeast denver and lived downtown for about six-ish years - the difference between here and there is that denver is very western: lots of room to spread, making the reaches of public transportation less than effective. the east coast cities are so centralized and basically right on top of each other that it’s a public transit enthusiast’s dream.
i miss my car, but i love me some subway.
