Hi Phil - thanks for the first hand account. I find it interesting that unlike other parts of the world, here looks are somewhat secondary and the ability to be a confident and engaging conversationalist is the foremost talent. Much more mental than physical.

Thanks again, good comment.

I was just in Japan in late September and was fortunate to experience a host bars... although I didn't have to spend a single yen. Our friends took us there (both men and women) during our last night in Japan and I was very impressed with how the hosts were able to communicate with me despite their lack of english. Although many were skinny, spiked hair, makeup wearing hosts, a good number of them were very attractive when compared to a westerner's definition of beauty... but I digress... what was interesting was that although they didn't know I am gay, the successful hosts definitely had a gift when it came to charisma, because by the end of the night I was slight in some sort of a "dream"--they make you feel pretty special.... I think that's why many Japanese women (and some male counterparts) frequent these bars--to escape their troubles.

Another interesting note--my Japanese-native friends were telling me how straight men often take their female dates to host bars, as a way to "get them in the mood."
