Lovelys Confections . Shells and Sauce
An update on Shells and Sauce, a small Italian eatery in Congress Park with excellent food and a quirky staff and clientele: They’ve been constructing a rooftop patio over the winter, and it appears it’s almost open. The indoor dining area is already small, yet comfortable while cozy and somehow even manages to include a tiny bar – so this should almost double the space. Given the sporadic thunderstorms that have been ambling through town I wonder if they’ll request solo diners double up downstairs when the the 20 minute torrents pass over. They’re at 2600 East 12th Avenue. Also there’s plenty of scrapwood behind the building. But ask if it’s for the taking
Below right. A friend came over for dinner last week and brought us an entire box of cupcakes from Lovely Confection, at Colfax and Steele. I snapped this photo soon before these disappeared into the hands of our guests. This mix included the regular flavors, and some surprises like carrot cake too. It’s the first time I’ve heard of Lovely, which uses local suppliers and is all organic. I’ll have to stop by for coffee soon.

I’ve been to Lovely once, and the cup cakes are good. One turn off is that everything at Lovely is served on disposable plates / cutlery / cups, which I personally hate. It is just so much nicer to eat off of a real plate using real silverware and drink my cap from a real cup.
As far as general atmosphere goes, I prefer the “Shoppe” across the street. They specialize in cup cakes, cereal (think Lucky Charms) and design (as in books, mags and art). It fits in well with the Colfax funky art aesthetic. Whereas Lovely, well, fits in (and would do well) in a upscale suburban setting.
While I prefer the Shoppe, it is a shame that these two great cupcake places are literally across the street from one another.
James, you should checkout both and get back to us.
