Sears Tower vs Willis Tower
The Sears Tower is now the Willis Tower, newly coined after the British company that purchased naming rights. Like my friends in Chicago I am completely against the name change. None of us know one person who will actually call it the “Willis Tower,” and believe that any value and benefit gained by the name change will be far outweighed by the cultural connection that will be lost.
At least when the new “Invesco Field” was constructed here in Denver they were able to incorporate “Mile High” into the name, but unfortunately there’s no keeping the 30 year moniker for the midwest’s most recognizable building.
And for those who say, “just move on – things change” – consider this comment in the Chicagoist:
When’s the last time John Hancock Insurance had any connection to that other big Chicago building? How long has it been since Wrigley owned that little ballpark on the north side? Some names outlive their origins. Sears Tower is one of them.
