I spent a day in Ann Arbor recently, and for dinner wound up at Ashley’s near the University of Michigan. This pub near is a staple for U of M students, and for good reason: The selection of beers can’t be beat. Although local reviews are mixed on the food, the beer selection is top notch and covers almost every type of ale. They also rely on your reviews in deciding what brews to keep and witch ones to ditch.
If it’s your first time visiting be sure to order up the beer sampler and round up three types to share with your friends.
The offer light wraps, but the bulk of the servings are burgers and a daily rotation of various soups. I had the fish and chips platter, which rivaled the more refined Graydon’s Crossing over in Grand Rapids.
Downstairs there’s a lounge with a few pool tables where you can lounge with friends while enjoying appetizers like warm crab dip and coconut shrimp. Plus all the other fried cheese regulars. We sat in the front overlooking South State Street.
They’re at 338 South State Street, directly across from the U of M campus – and also conveniently located on the web at ashleys.com
